On 28 September, the Council of the European Union agreed to extend the temporary protection for people fleeing from Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine from 4 March 2024 to 4 March 2025.

The Irish government has announced that from 4 January 2024, the validity of a residence permit in Ireland on the basis of Temporary Protection will be extended until 4 March 2025.

This means an automatic extension of your residence permit. You do not need to apply for an extension. In the future, all residence permits that we grant on the basis of temporary protection will be valid until 4th March 2025.

Your current TPC (temporary protection certificate or yellow paper) and your current IRP (Irish Residence Permit) will be valid until 4th March 2025, and it is legal for you to reside in Ireland even if you do not apply for a new TPC or IRP.

A confirmation notice, confirming this extension is available on the Irish immigration website. This can be downloaded (pdf) and printed by Beneficiaries of Temporary protection (BoTPs) as evidence of the extension which, along with their original Temporary Protection permission certificate, will confirm their status in the State.
